ultimate heavy metal guitar solo
What about "We Are Stars" by Hear 'N' Aid? Must include entire solo (solos)!
Not sure about level though? Duncan, is it hard enough for level 3?

ultimate heavy metal tracks
Or, what about "YYZ" by Rush? I'm not sure if that counts as heavy metal or classic rock? Or is it prog rock? Does anyone actually know what defines heavy metal? I wonder if Duncan knows?

Re: ultimate tracks to learn on a metal course
Duncan knows everything Jimmy!!!
Two great songs you've suggested. I think they are WAY above what would be expected at level 3. I'm sure Duncan will expand on this when he's online next.
Interesting point about YYZ. Categorising music is always a tricky one. I guess I'd be inclined to class Rush as prog rock but it's all just Rock 'n' Roll really isn't it?!?!

"knock knock"
Hi Jimmy,
Thanks for bearing with us. Sorry that Dunc's not got his act together yet and logged in. I'll mention it to him (again!!!). Hopefully we'll start getting more people signing up and chatting over Christmas.
Have a fun weekend.

Ultimate heavy metal guitar solo
Hi Jimmy
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to get on the Embassy forum. Faith has had a go at me about it several (loads of) times. To answer your questions: -
Firstly, “We Are Stars” is an excellent suggestion. It’s also one of my favourite solos. It’s like a textbook for Heavy Metal lead guitar. As far as including it on the Heavy Metal course though it would be asking too much at Level 3. It’s far beyond Grade 8 level of difficulty and I very much doubt that the average professional guitarist could play the entire solo especially the Yngwie J. Malmsteen, George Lynch and Neal Schon solos. But perhaps we can include it as recommended listening.
Secondly, Rush are one of my absolute favourite bands and I have always considered them to be Heavy Metal. “YYZ” is a great track but if I was going to include a Rush track in the Heavy Metal qualification it would be my personal favourite “Limelight”. To be realistic though both these tracks would be too difficult for Level 3.
I am currently preparing materials for the Heavy Metal course and my aim is to give students a solid foundation in the style. It will focus on the influential guitarists and groups that essentially defined the style such as Deep Purple & Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Diamond Head etc.
